The Curator’s Crates: Volume 8

This abbreviated edition of The Curator's Crates features song recommendations and After Dark Alerts.

The Curator’s Crates: Volume 8
SZNL for BK Loves UKG shot by Olivia Dituro.

This may be my most sonically scattered song recommendation list yet. I’m currently preparing for several different types of sets, each with its own mood, pace, and audience. The range here reflects the different spaces I’m playing, the moments I’m building toward, and the flexibility I’m aiming for behind the decks. You can find more information on my February 15th and 18th sets in the "After Dark Alerts" section.

MC69 - Swank Mami

“MC69” by Swank Mami is an unapologetic, club‑ready track that blends baile funk, Eurodance, and silky R&B. As the opening track on her 2025 EP Worldstar, it functions less as an introduction and more as a declaration. For that same reason, it serves as an ideal entry point for "On Loop," setting a tone defined by urgency, polish, and unapologetic presence.

God - Sinjin Hawke, Zora Jones

With "God" Sinjin Hawke & Zora Jones crafted a song that feels like standing inside a collapsing cathedral built from bass, distortion, and light. They employ an interesting technique in which sections evolve through mutation (filters opening, distortion increasing, layers collapsing) rather than repetition.

Jungly - Qemist

We are now turning to one of my favorite tracks, which encapsulates the core elements of my portfolio as OGD: jungle, a pitched‑up vocal, and influences drawn from Jersey club. The track achieves a precise balance between friction and smoothness, as atmospheric layers of vocals and synths are set against tightly articulated snares and kicks. Although "Jungly" is unequivocally rooted in jungle, its accelerated pacing and compressed energy align it with the urgent, high‑pressure characteristics of footwork.

Let U No - DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn

“Let U No” by DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn synthesizes many of the elements present in the preceding recommendations. It is a is a foundational footwork track that distills the genre to its most direct and functional elements. The track alternates between forward momentum and sudden resistance or destabilization, keeping the dancer in a constant state of adjustment rather than steady flow. This push and pull will draw even the most hesitant partygoer to the dance floor.

Given that this is an abbreviated edition of The Curator's Crates, the below Spotify playlist is an hour of music that gives a similar vibe to the above four songs. Think jungle, jersey club, footwork, bass, with some pops of baile funk and R&B.

White Label Records

Test Pressings/ Plug Copies

Artwork Credit: Instagram.com/mjrcdy

This section is inspired by the history of white label vinyl records used as promotional copies by DJs. Record labels would often send DJs advance copies of releases to test out on crowds. In some cases, the records would even be mixed differently to sound better on club speakers.

The hope is to spotlight new and exciting sounds that you are able to download and take with you - either for casual listening or to share in club settings.

Ariana Grande - Positions (Smooth Like Silk Mix)

This week, Queens based DJ and Producer silkshirt blesses our ears with a lush UKG remix of Ariana Grande’s “Positions.”

silkshirt’s best qualities are his ability to navigate multiple genres with seamless mixing, all the while gracing a dance floor with ID’s you didn’t know you needed.

This remix shows off silkshirt’s knowledge and experience of breaks with a clean but snappy UK style drum line. Ariana’s vocals fit the pattern very well and are amplified by jazz chords, lush guitar runs and sax samples that fill the rest of the space. This remix can make a very nice addition to any melodic UKG set, but is groovy enough to find its way into a breaks filled Baltimore or Jersey Club set as well.

I’ve always admired his silkshirt’s mixing ability, so I love what I’m hearing from him in terms of production here. I’m anticipating an uptick in original music from him this year as his growth in the medium is quite evident.
